5 Reasons to Learn a Trade

Superior Resources Group

There’s a common perception out there that a college education is essential for a rewarding career, with a four-year degree being the baseline and an advanced degree equating to an even more rewarding career.

However, a college degree is not vital to a good paycheck and having a rewarding career. In fact, a skilled trade career offers many of the same perks as a white-collar career, but without the price tag of a college degree. From metal production to HVAC, the range of opportunities in the skilled trades are endless.

If you’re currently considering a career in the trades, consider the following five reasons to pursue it.

1) You Can Hit the Ground Running

Some people just don’t do well in a classroom setting. Maybe they aren’t great at taking tests or learn better in hands-on situations. They’d rather be creating or fixing things than learning about academic theory and abstract ideas.

In the skilled trades, work on projects starts from the outset. There aren’t unpaid internships involving observation and menial chores. Those learning a trade start on the shop floor, learning skills from seasoned professionals. While college students pursuing a four-year degree in a classroom, those in a trade apprenticeship are earning an income and gaining valuable experience in the process.

2) Lower Entry Costs

Many young people don’t think about bearing the financial costs of higher education, which can be $10,000 per year of education or more.

Conversely, many people graduate from trade school with little or no student loan debt. In addition to lower tuition costs, there are numerous scholarships and grants available. Furthermore, most trade school students are able to learn while earning an income in their field.

3) Good Income

In most fields, entry-level workers earn less than $40,000 per year. Entry-level sheet metal workers, on the other hand, can make more than $50,000 per year, according to U.S. News & World Report. Obviously, those with more experience can earn even more.

While pay rates vary among locations, industries, experience levels, and specializations, skilled trade workers can depend on making a good living.

4) Career Advancement Opportunities

With the workforce in the trades getting older, there will be a massive amount of career opportunities for Millennials and Gen Zers in the very near future. Apart from a wealth of job openings, there will always a demand for metal workers, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and other tradespeople. These jobs cannot be outsourced or automated.

5) Do What You Went to School For

Many people graduate college with a degree in one field but wind up working in another field. With a trade, you are virtually guaranteed to find work in the field that you studied. In addition to working for an employer, skilled tradespeople can also start their own business.
